Morning Gaze-Lion

Lion (Pantera leo)

The lion is the second largest of the big cats after the tiger.  It lives in the sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and northwest  India.  After much hunting, the lion population has been reduced by 50% in the last 20 years.  Lions live together in a pride with one male.  The females do the hunting and the male baby-sits, protecting the cubs.  After the hunt, the male eats first.  He can weigh as much as 550 pounds and his roar can be heard 5 miles away.  Lions are tawny yellowish brown and the males mane can be all tawny yellow to black.  The two  notorious man eaters of Tsavo (mounted in the Chicago Field Museum) had no manes, believed to be because of a high testosterone level.
The lion image has been depicted in royalty, flags, logos, movie screen production, jewelry, coins, stamps and recognized as a symbol of power.
