"Beach Balls" - Harbor Seal

Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina richardii or richardsi)

A common seal found along the San Diego coast.  The torpedo shaped mammal has a thick layer of blubber and the flippers, which are efficient in  the water but, do not allow the seal to travel on land.  They bounce up and down along the sand to travel.  The fur color ranges from gray buff to dark brown with sprinkled spots.  The seal has a transparent membrane covering the eye for protection and no earflaps.  Their diet consists of fish, occasionally mollusks, shrimp and squid.

They have been protected by the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act since 1972.
