Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) The Chinese word for panda is Xiongmao and it means "Giant Cat Bear"as the pupils of their eyes have vertical slits. The panda is located on the mountain slopes of China and Eastern Tibet. The color is black and white. Males can weigh up to 350 pounds and females care for one cub at a time. There are fewer that 1500 pandas in the wild. Their diet consists of different species of bamboo. Pandas do not hibernate. They are shy and secretive preferring to live solitary. Pandas are fully protected in China against poaching, however, the hunting goes on. Pandas have become the symbol of conservation of endangered wildlife. |
